The Messe de Minuit, our feature for the evening, is one of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s most famous works, heard almost as often as his famous Te Deum. It is essential music to celebrate Christmas night. The success of Charpentier’s Christmas Mass was based on the combination of the sacred and popular melodies. Like many composers of his time, he used popular tunes for the base of his melodies, which you will also hear in this performance, along with Noël sur les instruments.
