About us
Mission
Kammerchor London presents historically informed live performances that illuminate the vitality and richness of Renaissance and Baroque music. Through our unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, we cultivate profound and life-enhancing listening experiences, and engage audiences with the passion, precision, and integrity that define our ensemble.
History
Originally created for the performance of Bach Cantatas sung one voice per part with minimal instrumental accompaniment, we have grown to a professional choral and instrumental classical music ensemble with a focus on early music. New voices and instruments are always welcome, as we try to give as many musicians as possible a chance to perform this fabulous music!
Kammerchor performs in intimate chamber settings, provides opportunities for local professional-calibre musicians, and fosters new talent.
As a registered charity, donor and sponsor contributions help support our high quality performances in the London area. It is fed by love of the music, working with musicians of like mind, and performing for an appreciative audience. See our list of donors.
Kammerchor London is the 2020 and 2023 Forest City London Music Awards recipient in the Classical Choir category.
Artistic leadership & administration
Ariel Harwood-Jones, founder & artistic director
As the founder, Ariel is the originator of Kammerchor’s purpose and identity. She defines and cultivates a culture that reflects the values and aspirations of the ensemble. She is also someone who helps keep the wheels turning. This involves securing rehearsal and performance venues, managing budgets, coordinating schedules, overseeing communications, and fostering relationships with stakeholders and the wider community. Every logistical decision directly impacts the group’s ability to perform at its highest level.
This role demands patience, adaptability, and a deep love for people. Ariel enjoys celebrating the small victories, like a perfectly blended chord or a successful fundraiser, and attempts to navigate the challenges with resilience. She is nurturing a living, breathing community where voices unite, friendships grow, and music becomes a shared heartbeat.
Stephane Potvin, artistic administrator & conductor
Stéphane, born and raised in a small town near the city of Québec, he started music lessons at age seven. In high school he discovered his interest in choral and orchestral conducting. During his time in the McGill Chamber Singers, he fell in love with early music; that passion still flows him today. He received a B. Mus in piano performance from McGill and master’s degree in choral conducting from the University of Illinois. He studied conducting with Frieder Bernius, Gustav Meier, Otto-Werner Mueller, Fred Stoltzfus, Jerome Summers, and Timothy Vernon.
Alongside his 40-year conducting career, he managed a number of groups giving him the understanding and experience needed to oversee the various aspects of day-to-day operations. He is a visionary and a long-term planner, with the skills to make things happen. He devotes his energies in teaching voice privately, managing Kammerchor London’s operations, and conducting all larger ensemble concerts.
