Light in Darkness is a program built around reflection, anticipation, and the gradual arrival of hope in the season of Advent and Christmas. The music moves from shadowed, quiet writing to brighter, vibrant sonorities as the themes unfold. We invite the audience to sing along, providing a chance to join in with familiar melodies and to discover something new in this time of waiting and light.
This all-Couperin program features Paul Merritt on organ in Messe pour les Paroisses, a work that weaves organ versets and sung text into a beautiful tapestry. And Ariel Harwood‑Jones and Katy Clark partner again in the sublime Leçons de Ténèbres. This concert at First‑St. Andrews United Church offers an intimate, expressive evening of sacred French Baroque music.
The heart of this program is Bach’s Actus tragicus. It brings together voices, recorders, gambas, and continuo in one of the master’s most profound cantatas. Bach’s transparent writing speaks with clarity and depth about the quiet journey through mortality, comfort, and trust. In addition, on this program we offer a beautiful mass by French composer d’Ambleville and a few surprises.
